Loreley
In early times, many a ships sank here.
It was reported to have been a pretty, nacked, blonde woman, who distracted the skippers
from their work through her songs and by doing this, thrust many a ship into ruins.
Through the narrowness of the river bed, the Rhine river was in fact within living memory
a dangerous challenge for the navigation.
Modern navigation systems make a fearless gaze of the legendary Lorelei rock possible
today. Big picture
Bacharach
View towards the town of Bacharach on the Rhine river, which has existed
before the Romans and whose name can be lead back to the celtic settlement - Baccaracum.
The first documentary mention of the town was in the year 923.
In the background you can also see (from left to right) Peterskirche (church of St.
Peter), Wernerkapelle (ruin of Werner chapel) and Liebesturm (tower of love).
Right on the Rhine hills is castle Stahleck - whose exact accruement time isn't known, but
it's been proved that the castle was already inhabited in the year 1095. Big picture

"Gasthaus Stahl is a real gem of a place, in that
wonderful, scenic location up in the hills above the Rhine, in classic tiny Dellhofen
village, yet only minutes away from the walled cities of Oberwesel and Bacharach, right on
the river.
There are enough castles and other places of interest within 30-90 minutes of
pleasant driving to keep tourists busy for a long time, but the serenity of the inn itself
is the best feature.
The rooms are so classic, yet they have all the modern touches we need. The
furnishings and atmosphere of the inn are from times we thought had gone past, and it was
great to just soak in the gemutlichkeit! ... "

The
old brick arch wine cellar of the Winery Stahl, in
which the wines are stored; the wine grapes are self-grown and the wines are self-made.
Wine tasting for groups up to 30 people in the brick arch wine cellar. You'll become a
romantic feeling with the lights off and set aglow in candlelight. "The wine tasting at Weingut Stahl is truly educational, with more
varieties of flavorful German wines than most Americans ever realize exist. I think that
is worth the trip in itself."

Burg Rheinfels
The Rheinfels castle was the most powerful fortress along the Middle Rhine.
Whereas, about only one third of the original structure survived destruction.
During the centuries Burg Rheinfels was the scene of numerous bloody sieges and violent
changes of ownership. Only a few years after construction started in 1245 it was able to
proof it was invincible, when 27 towns formed an alliance to put an end to Graf Diether
von Katzenelnbogen.
He arbitrarily increased the custom duty on the Rhine. 8000 men on foot and 1000 knights
supported by 50 ships attempted to capture the castle. They gave up after one year and 14
weeks without making any progress.
Only Napoleon took possession of the castle without a fight in 1796. He had the
fortifications and the castle blown up with the exception of a few remains.
The castle belongs to the town of St. Goar since 1925.
Open to the public during the summer season.

Liebfrauenkirche
The building of Liebfrauenkirche started in 1308. The Goldaltar, which is the earliest and
most monumental wood altar from the 14th century, was finished in 1331.
The pictures and altars are proof of the history and meaning of the church. In 1975 the
altar was robbed of all the decorative figures. Today, all except three are back on the
original places.
Appointments for guided tours can be found in the eventscalender from Oberwesel in the
broshure. Big picture

Rüdesheim
Since the beginning of the last century, Ruedesheim has been an attraction for English and
German romantic writers, and considering the modest number of its residents, is today one
of the most visited towns in Germany.
Historical buildings, such as the Klunkhardshof, the fortified Adlerhof, the thousand year
old Broemser castle, and the ruin of Ehrenfels castle provide pleasure for the eyes and
senses
Those seeking tranquility will find it: in the extensive forests of the nature park
"Rhein-Taunus", in the hidden valleys or in the spaciousness of the vineyards.
From the vantage points of the Niederwald, the visitor can enjoy breathtaking views of the
narrow Rhine valley, the Nahe estuary, and the extensive wine growing landscape of the
Rheingau.
Speaking of wine: enjoy the world-famous Ruedesheimer Riesling, together with music and
dancing, in the numerous inns and wine bars of the Drosselgosse, where there are places
which sell home-grown wine. Big picture
